The dies decide the joint. GYS makes RMB die kits to each manufacturer's repair specification, so the kit you buy here is the one named in the procedure: RMB 03 for the VW Group, RMB 12 for BMW, RMB 17 for Rivian, RMB 18 for Tesla, RMB 20 for Lucid and the push-pull kits for the 8T.PP and 10T.PP riveters. The standard die kit covers the A, B, D, E, F and T dies most steel and aluminum repairs use.

Rivets and single dies

Self-piercing rivets come in blister packs of 100 and 200 by diameter and length, from 3.3 x 3.5 mm to 5.3 x 9.0 mm, plus flow-form and blind rivets for the adaptors. Single dies are listed by their letter and number so you can replace one worn die instead of a kit. Each page shows the riveters it fits, and the 8T, 10T and COBRA share the same dies.

How to size a self-piercing rivet

Rivet length = measured stack thickness + 1 to 2 mm. Measure the combined thickness of the sheets you are joining, then take a rivet 1 mm to 2 mm longer, and nothing outside that window. Shorter and the rivet does not flare into the bottom sheet; longer and it punches through or cracks it. A 3.5 mm stack takes a 4.5 to 5.5 mm rivet: from the GYS range, the Ø5.3 × 5.0 mm. Only the length comes from your measurement; the OEM procedure tells you which diameter the joint takes.

Die and pressure go with the diameter. Ø3.3 mm rivets set with the A1 + A2 dies at 3 to 5.2 bar (44 to 75 PSI) on the riveter's regulator; Ø5.3 mm rivets set with the B1 + B2 dies at 4.7 to 5.8 bar (68 to 84 PSI). All four dies are in the standard die kit.
